Tucked among the Adirondack Mountains' peaks and valleys are the studios of dozens of artists and craftspeople. Inspired by the region's rugged beauty, they make everything from old fashioned quilts to avant-garde jewelry.
When journalist Linda Lumsden set out in 1984 to learn more about them, she discovered the artisans are as diverse as their products:
- Jim Cameron crafts traditional Adirondack guide boats in a former great camp boathouse.
- Wilderness photographer Nathan Farb ricochets from mountain summits to high technology darkrooms.
- Nina Winkel, in her eighties, continues to sculpt,
- Beth Bridges comes closest to creating a purely Adirondack craft, etching wildlife scenes on freshly picked tree fungus.
- Tom Amoroso - Leather worker
- Creta Chase - Lamp shade maker
- Cheri Cross & Lee Kazanas - Potters
- Terry Hague - Wood carver
- Pat Hoffman - Basket maker / sculptor
- Charles Atwood King - Jack of all arts
- Annoel Krider - Weaver
- Edith Mitchell - Quilter
- Tom Phillips - Furniture maker
- Jaqui Steinberg - Jeweler
- Alice Wand - Paper maker
Adirondack Artists & Craftspeople contains fifteen profiles of the independent people Lumsden discovered at work in those mountain studios. Accompanied by John Santoro's evocative photographs, they offer a fascinating glimpse of people who comprise a colorful part of the Adirondack landscape.
