AMERICAN ADOBES: Rural Houses in Northern New Mexicoby Berverly Spears.
The pitched roof, adobe houses of northern New Mexico have not received as much attention as the more visible but less authentic Santa Fe, or pueblo-style houses. Yet the pitched roof adobe represents a unique combination of seventeenth century adobe-building traditions with various features of nineteenth-century American architecture.
A rich and varied style developed over a period of about hundred years. Today hundreds of these homemade houses still stand in small communities throughout the mountains and valleys of northern New Mexico.
While other books have focused on historic Spanish Colonial architecture and recent derivative styles, Spears focuses on the vernacular architecture of rural adobe houses. Her rich text illustrated with many photographs, documents a true indigenous style.
Architects, historic preservationists, builders, and homeowners will find AMERICAN ADOBES a valuable and long overdue contribution to the literature of the region.
