Description

This illustrated study of the American poster and its use in the United States, from the early 19th century to the present day, is based upon an exhibition prepared by The American Federation of Arts.

The exhibition, first shown in the summer of 1967, is scheduled to circulate until 1969. What use is being made of the poster in the 20th century, within the framework of current billboard legislation and business practice, is the subject of Margaret Cogswell's text, an absorbing study of a changing medium in its new environment.

Edgar W. Breitenbach, Chief of the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress, has contributed an historical survey that is fascinating for its detailed and revealing report on the poster's Decade of Glory - the 1890s.

In its heyday the poster in America as well as abroad, and especially in Paris, was the subject of a collecting craze of almost incredible dimensions. The poster had developed a character of its own by the early 19th century.

Limiting itself to essentials, making effective use of color, filled with the gaiety of folk art, it exerted appeal not only to the public but also to many artists of great talent.

The Breitenbach report on posters of the th century is so informative and delightful that it may well stir a new craze among collectors. Also included in the book is a selected bibliography by Caroline H. Backlund.
