Apollinaire on Art

Essays and Reviews 1902 - 1918

Guillaume Apollinaire is best known to American readers as a poet -- yet he was also an art critic of considerable influence during the early years of last century.

An early defender of cubism (he was responsible for Picasso's having met Braque in 1907), he helped organize the crucial cubist exhibition at the Salon des independents in 1911.

As a contributor to several important Paris newspapers -- including, of course, his own Les Soirees de Paris the poet critic reviewed nearly every significant exhibition of his day and is considered by many to be the founder of modern art journalism.
