Written in 1727 by John Gay, this opera was first performed in 1728 and was an immediate success at the Lyric Theater in London. The Beggar's Opera proved to be a lusty and witty, catchy and entertaining musical play. It is rumored that this opera was written in order to caricature Sir Robert Walpole. What was actually accomplished was a social picture of London in the early 18th century.
Lithographic illustration by Mariette Lydis, this edition of the Beggar's Opera includes the music for all of the songs hand drawn by New York artist LeRoy Appleton.
