The 118th edition of The British Journal of Photography Annual, the world's oldest photographic yearbook, provides an essential companion to photographers, whether amateurs or professional, who are interested in what is going on, in pictures and technology, in the photographic world today.
From the picture section, an idea may be gained of the wide spectrum of the types of work currently being produced. This year there is a change in style with the showing of a more representative selection of the work of a selected number of picture makers, providing a series of short portfolios. In this way the identity of an individual photographer's work can be better established.
There is a selection of work in color and the aim throughout has been to provide a mirror for contemporary work rather than to select on the basis of graphic impact.
For the technically minded, the 1978 edition contains the unique formulary for the processing of black and white and color materials, fully updated. There is a survey of the current state of design of the 35mm SLR camera and its complex electronics.
The Epitome of Progress section records developments during the past year, covering a number of photographic fields, including color photography, education and the exhibition scene. The main feature article this year is an illustrated survey of the work of Imogen Cunningham, regarded as one of America's finest women photographers, by Thomas Joshua Cooper and Gerry Badger.
