Description
Ruth Dunnell's long-awaited book on Buddhism and Tangut state formation expands on themes raised in her earlier work on Tangut history, in particular, the place of Buddhism in the early Xia state officially founded by Li (Weiming) Yuanhao in 1038 and the role of the empress dowager regents in preserving that state against external and internal enemies.
China Review International,
Fall 1997
Part one of this book is a detailed study of Buddhism in his Xia state during its formative stage. It describes the role of Buddhism as a legitimizing factor in the context of a political history based on a multitude of sources.
Part two is a most meticulous study of the famous 1094 inscriptions in Liangzhou and the temple and whose precincts the stele has been erected.
Professor Dunell uses the inscriptions as a basis for exploring a topic that is central to the interpretation of Chinese long history: how did non-Han peoples develop strategies for preserving their cultural and political integrity, even as they adapted Han bureaucratic techniques and created state structures of their own?
