Crafts of Israel focuses on the past as it is reflected in the crafts of the present. It is organized in two basic sections: first an overview of the crafts as a whole; and second, the presentation of each individual craft, its development, and its relation to life in Israel today.
Brief biographies of famous and lesser-known artists and craftsmen from seventy different backgrounds show how they adapted to the new country while still retaining their individual heritage.
More then 300 illustrations, many in full color, explore a wide range of handicrafts, from early Roman and Byzantine antiquities in the Israel Museum to original contemporary creations.
There are ceramics by students at the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, gold and silver jewelry, religious objects, details of ceramic walls, stoneware sculptures, fabrics from traditional to modern batiks, silk screened cloth, appliques, wall hangings, bobbin lace work, wool rugs in striking designs, handwoven Irish wool and other handsome materials, Shiona Shimshi's high fired clay works, dolls, glass and stoneware vases and bowls, and high fashion wearing apparel.
