Description

Sir Francis Drake was the first commander of a round the world voyage to survive the ordeal and sail again. On June 17, 1579 -- midpoint in the voyage, his ship heavily laden with Spanish gold and silver -- Drake landed the Golden Hind somewhere in northern California to make repairs and to take on food and water. He stayed 36 days, was crowned King as he conveniently interpreted gestures by friendly natives, then sailed across the Pacific and home to England and glory.

Exactly where Drake landed in northern California remains a mystery. In the past fifty years the mystery has turned into a heated debate among Drake buffs, scholars, and those interested in California history. This book is an exploration of the various debates by leading experts..
