Description

Since ancient times, the Orient has viewed lovemaking as one of the highest art forms. This has been true among the followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianisms, who have sought to exalt the spirit through the flesh. In the cultures of India, Nepal, China and Japan it was customary to present beautifully painted erotic manuals, scrolls, or books to a couple upon their marriage.

These pillow books serve to initiate the newlyweds into the aesthetics and techniques of physical love. Pillow books were often illustrated by great artist, usually working under noble patronage. Subtle relationships of color and form were used to convey the beauty and esoteric significance of sexuality.

This volume presents 130 illustrations of erotic scenarios and love postures; exquisite Chinese works originally painted on silk; Japanese Shjunga prints and paintings; ecstatic love scenes from various parts of India; and the finest examples from a unique of Nepalese paintings created for the private collection of a king of Nepal.

The Chinese painters were truly masters of the erotic sentiment. Specific sexual postures, facial expressions and the inclusion of symbolic elements such as dragons, phoenixes, and open lotuses were carefully composed according to Taoist tradition. Whereas Chinese erotica is reserved and illustrates passion under control, Japanese erotica is more dynamic and emotional.

Erotic abandon is very much a part of Japanese Shunga art, which covers a wide range of sexual scenarios.

A variety of artistic styles is represented in the Indian art reproduced here, including examples of Deccan, Bengal, and the Rasjasthan Hills. They convey cultural information as well as important Tantric concepts. Bother Tantric and Taoist teachings reached Nepal, resulting in a highly symbolic art in which the esoteric and the erotic are wed.

The art and the philosophy that emerge from The Pillow Book are a celebration of sexual union as the human counterpart to the cosmic act of creation. This exquisite collection of paintings expressing the erotic sentiment speaks to the modern heart, freed from the sexual inhibition of the past and ready for the joyous experience of the ecstatic.
