Description

The Journal of Eugene Delacroix, the great 19th century painter, passionately opposed the conventions of Jacques-Louis David and other academic artists and reunited elements of the Baroque style to create a long line of masterpieces.

Yet had Delacroix never achieved fame as a painter, he would still have gained attention as the writer of an exciting and expressive diary.

Delacroix's Journal is an entertaining work of literature as well as a vital source for scholars and students. In it the artist discusses the works of such masters as Rubens, Michelangelo, and Constable; the state of architecture, literature and music; and his own paintings at their various stages of completion.

The complete text of the journal runs to over 1000 pages. THIS selection, edited by Hubert Wellington and translated by Lucy Norton, represents about one-half of the original journal, and provides and uncluttered presentation of Delacroix's work and character.

CONDITION: USED in fair condition. An unusual and relatively hard to find piece which is why we are carrying this book in this condition. A wonderful art history, period piece, source book!
