At a time some hundred years from now, in what used to be Merry old England, Dion Quern, sensitive, independent, and intellectually affluent is an anachronism in an unbalanced society consisting of five enslaved men for every twelve superwomen.

As an apparently irreversible side effect of new forms of birth control, the men have been heavily outnumbered by a new breed of women who have demonstrated their superiority in several masculine strongholds -- notably the sciences and politics.
Marriage - as a social institution - has fallen apart. Female prostitution has vanished; male prostitution grown. The women are numerically, physically, and psychologically in an unavailable position. The men are reduced to chattels.
