Fanciful subject by noted German Symbolist etcher, Otto Greiner (1869- 1916). In this rendering two fauns are pursued by angry villagers, and make a hasty escape.

Etching, India proof (thin paper mounted on heavier backing). Image size 7.25 X 10.5 inches, sheet size 10 X 14.5 inches. In excellent condition, includes archival study mat. Printed in margin- Original radirung von O. Greiner, Druck & Verlag der Gesellschaft F. Vervlief Kunst, Wein.

Greiner, along with his friend and mentor, Max Klinger, are the two major artists responsible for the symbolist movement. In this precursor to surrealism, the artists drew from dreams, myth and fantasy in order to create a mystical vision of the world. This print is highly regarded, and copies may be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Accession K3855) and the National Gallery of Canada (no. 37517).
