Jacques Bellange worked as court painter at Nancy, the capital of the independent Duchy of Corraine. His activity at the court is recorded from 1602 to 1616 during the reign of the dukes Charles III and Henri II. Belange's art, along with that of El Greco in Spain, Freminet in France, and Bloemaert in Utrecht, is one of the last manifestations of the international style know as mannerism.
