The art of John Marin, produced during a career that spanned half a century, is both distinctively beautiful and intellectually challenging. A revered member of the circle surround the great connoisseur Alfred Stieglitz and greatly admired by artists and critics alike, Marin produced a large body of watercolors, oil paintings, drawings and etchings that is one of the major achievements of American Art and central to the development of our modern vision.

Published on the occasion of an exhibition held at the National Gallery of Art, Jan. 28 to April 15, 1990 entitled Selections and Transformation: The Art of John Marin.

Included in here are sections devoted to Marin's Youth; his Etchings; his travels in Europe; his Urban Landscapes; his work in Maine; New England and New Mexico; The Sea; later calligraphic works; pictures of Marin at work. Lengthy illustrated chronology by Ben Glenn II. Selected bibliography, Index. A terrific catalogue with an abundance of color plates and interesting text. Many of the works illustrated come from the collection of the National Gallery. Wraps. 312 pp. 125 bw, 175 color plates.
