What distinguishes Judith Golden as a portraitist is her conviction that we are not the individuals we appear to be. The masks we wear in daily life - our cosmetic covers and the appointments of our rank or trade -- have been the sources of Golden's imagery for more than a decade.While the general purpose in portraiture has been to identify some revealing quality of gesture or facial expression that captures the sitter's soul, Golden's quest has been to identify the chameleon in each of us, to recapitulate our most common guises.

The Cyles photographs are made in the desert landscape... dirt or water may be added in smears or strokes and layers of leaves, sticks and bits of cactus needle are placed carefully around the figure.
