DESCRIPTION: Berber Kabylie tribe Cloisonne enamel bracelet, featuring four red coral
cabochons. The bracelet is oval, and is 2.5 inches inside, to fit a
lady's wrist. The enamel is complimented by twist work, carefully
made bezels for the coral insets. The enamel is wonderfully executed in
blue, green and yellow.
This is in the fashion of the Kabylie who live in the hills east of Algiers in Algeria. The Kabylie are one of the older ethnic groups native to Algeria. Their origin is unknown, some hypothesize that they are blended with the Vandals and invading Romans. The women are strong and independent, they wear colorful dresses and scarves and perform much of the manual labor, terrace farming.
Algeria borders the Mediterranean sea, situated between Morocco and Tunis. It lays claim to a large part of the Sahara desert but the area bordering the north of this country is filled with orange groves, olive trees and lovely rolling landscapes.
SIZING: The bracelet is oval, and is 2.5 inches inside, to fit a
lady's wrist. It opens and closes by hinge, which locks with a pin at the opposite side.
PROVENANCE : Purchased in Algeria in late 1980s by an ex-patriot American worker who brought it home with many stories of their time there.
CONDITION: Very good
overall. The chain connecting the clasp to the bracelet is broken - as shown in photo.
