Description

The Kennington martyrs were seventeen officers or NCO's in the Jacobite army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart. They were executed in 1746 at the Surrey gallows at Kennington on a site now occupied by St. Mark's Church, opposite Oval Tube Station... As a Scot, the present author grew up with the common perception of the Jacobite cause being firstly Scottish and secondly Roman Catholic. Further investigation reveals a far more complicated picture.... This Royal Stuart Society paper tells this story.
