Provenance: collected by Edward Rice, the author of the Richard Burton biography, editor of Jubilee and friend of Thomas Merton in the 1960s while roaming the globe after the closure of Jubilee. Has been maintained in dark, dry storage. Certificate of Provenance included.



Madubani paintings originated in a village of the same name located in the interiors of Bihar, India. The art is practiced by the females only. It is their creative expression of day to day experiences and happenings. It is practiced as a part of daily rituals. Madhubani is a centuries old craft.

The craft started as a welcome to the deities that, as per the belief, visited the homes of the devotees every morning.

Hindu deities and village life were common themes portrayed in these paintings. It appears that this is a wedding celebration.

CONDITION: This is a rolled piece, will be sent in a tube and you will need to frame and press flat. Size approximately 30 x 22 inches
