Description

Minnesota's Historic Lake Homes A Place at the Lake Paul Clifford Larson

A Place at the Lake is a pictorial account of the summer homes that have proliferated along Minnesota's lake shores.

Beginning with Lake Minnetonka and the watery garland embracing the Twin Cities, the story culminates in the persisting wilderness of the Arrowhead region wedged between the boundary waters and Lake Superior.

All types and styles appear, with log cabins and lakeside mansions holding places of equal dignity. Many of Minnesota's finest historic cabins and cottages can be appreciated today only through archival photographs. Some are too remote from public view to allow even a glancing inspection; others numbering in the hundreds, have been demolished because of urban encroachment or an owner's weariness with their age and style.

A Place at the Lake captures over one hundred and fifty views of these summer retreats in their prime. Perusing the beautifully tinted photographs is in itself an enchanting experience. But the photographs also open the way to fascinating historical episodes and personalities.

The text weaves these bits of local color into a compelling narrative of the many ways Minnesotans have carved out their distinctive places at the lake.
