The Drawing Center is a nonprofit institution that seeks through exhibition and education to express the quality and diversity of drawing as a major art form.  In showing the unique work on paper, the center aims to encourage public appreciation of drawing and stimulate artists to further their productivity and experimentation in the medium. 

Works by contemporary artist whose drawings are not yet represented by commercial Galleries and are not ordinarily on view in New York are the principal focus of The Drawing Center.  There is, however, a parallel focus on previously unexhibited drawings by established artists, when those drawings illuminate unusual aspects of the artists' oeuvres.

The Drawing Center was conceived and founded by Martha Beck.  It opened January 15, 1977, and since then has presented 25 exhibitions.  Of these, 16 have been group shows of the drawings of younger, lesser known artists.  Assembled mainly through the Centers's Artists' Viewing program, these groups shows introduced one hundred and seventy-four artists, each of whom is represented in New Drawing in America by one work.
