Archangel Raphael, patron saint of healers, name in Hebrew meaning - the angel who healed the earth.
The name of the archangel Raphael appears only in the Deuterocanonical Book of Tobit (Tobias). Tobit is considered canonical by Catholics, Orthodox and some Protestants. Raphael first appears disguised in human form as the travelling companion of the younger Tobias, calling himself "Azarias the son of the great Ananias".
During the adventurous course of the journey the archangel's protective influence is shown in many ways including the binding of the demon in the desert of upper Egypt. After the return and the healing of the blindness of the elder Tobias, Azarias makes himself known as "the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord" (Tobit, xii, 15)
In this depiction Raphael is shown here holding fish on a string, in one instance God instructed him to catch fish and use the gallbladder of the fish to cure Tobias.

Artist Javier Ramos, known for his retablos (saints painted on flat surfaces - boards) uses an old door as the basis for his work. Contemporary circa 1980 to present.
