The beloved deity, Tara, the Saviouress, has been exerting her fascination on devotees for upwards of 14 centuries. Three major strands intertwine to make the Tara we know today -- Bodhisattva, Mother Goddess and Tantric Deity, the embodiment of the perfect woman latent within all of us.
As a Bodhisattva, she vowed to work for the benefit of all beings until samsara is empty, and to do this always in the form of woman. This practical yet limitless inspiring resolution, writes English monk Martin Willson in his introduction, somehow makes her seem very real and close to us of the late twentieth century.
Tara has inspired some of the most marvelous Buddhist literature throughout the centuries, and collected here is a good proportion of it, translated from Sanskrit and Tibetan. Included are a history of the origin of the Tantra of Tara, canonical texts, sadhanas for practice, and the lyrical praises to Tara of Indian and Tibetan devotees. Included also are brief histories of the poets and writers themselves, and commentary and explanation throughout by Willson.
Much of the material here is translated and published in English for the first time. It is thorough and scholarly, but at the same time inspirational and an expression of devotion to Tara, one of the most popular of all Buddhist deities.
