It's a medium size world. It's alive and it makes music. Listen.
Delve deeply into trance with full length rituals from three spiritual
cultures using music to open up into extraordinary realms of being.
1. In Chinese Turkistan, the ancient brotherhood of the Naqsjbandi
Sufis perform the ZIKR, an Islamic "calling to God" built upon wordless
chanting.
2. In Morocco, the Ganawa brotherhood performs a leela serene and
healing nights of music and trance. The pulsing bass of the guimbri and
the chattering percussion of qaraqsh that accompany these rituals
embody the spirit which lured musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Ornette
Coleman and Pharoah Sanders to Morocco.
3. In Bali, at a Hindu temple festival, the hypnotic pulsing of the
gamelan - a bevy of gongs, metallophones and cymbals - drives
participants into trance to perform ugurek, a frenzied ritual where
trancers stab and themselves with long daggers
