Artists Representing Environmental Arts (AREA) first shoreline sculpture was exhibited at Roosevelt Island in 1976. Since then, twenty-seven outdoor art works have been placed on Ward's and Roosevelt's Islands, located in New York City's Upper East River. More than half were specifically created for their sites.
This season's six sculptures and environments are all on the grounds of the Manhattan Psychiatric Center at Ward's Island. Once again we are impressed with the sensitivity of the artists to the challenging demands of the sloping terrains and a vast field of wild grass. Four works were designed for these sites. All six attained a feeling of rapport with their immediate surroundings and met the requirements for grand scale projection....
This catalog presents the June 1981 - April 1982 Ward's Island sculptures. Artists participating are: Jay Coogan, Caspar Henselmann, Harold Lehr, Elisabeth Munro Smith, Evan Stoller, Jay Wholley.
