Travels in West Africa by Mary Kingsley
Originally published in 1897, Mary Kingsley tells of her travels to West Africa in 1893, at the age of thirty.
She chose to go to West Africa, notorious for its deadly climate and diseases, and its alarming wildlife. She went again in 1895, for the second and most celebrated of her West African journeys, to collect fishes and plants, and to investigate the beliefs and customs of the inland tribes. This book is based on these two journeys and made its author famous
Mary Kingsley was overwhelmed by the great natural beauty of the forest and rivers of the African continent. She was also deeply impressed by African culture, and appalled by the thin veneer of rubbishy white culture imposed by the British officials and some missionaries.
Therafter she devoted her life to explaining Africa to the British. She died at the age of 37 while nursing Boer prisoners in the Cape. Rudyard Kipling said of her, Being human, she must have been afraid of something but one never found out what it was.
