The American West is more than arid deserts, sagebrush plains, canyons and mesas, towering mountains, sprawling cities, lonely ranch lands, Native America, Hispanic America.
It the landscape of the American psyche. More than any other region, the West has exemplified the essential American spirit of independence, abundance, and boundless horizons.
For two hundred years, artists have interpreted the West -- its people, its places, its myths -- through the filter of their particular time.
