Description

Japanese Loyalism Reconstrued: Yamagata Daini's Ryushi shinron of 1759 by Bob Tadashi Wakabayashi

Yamagata Daini is a Japanese Confucian scholar who was executed in 1767 for lese-majeste. Lionized by imperial loyalists from the 1850s to 1945 for his biting critique of the Tokugawa political system and his supposed advocacy of the restoration of imperial rule, he has been transformed in the eyes of some postwar Japanese interpreters into a precocious advocate of modern modes of political activism, bourgeois democratic revolution, or radical populism.

Wakabayashi takes up the task of exorcising all these ghosts of Daini past and offering a new reading of Daini's main work of political philosophy that will reveal how his contemporaries construed his ideas.
